Introduction by Ron Goulart
A pathfinder and groundbreaker of the hard-boiled school of detective
fiction, a prolific contributor to the legendary BLACK MASK magazine during
the 1930s, as well as Dime Detective, Detective Story, and many other
titles, Roger Torrey has sadly garnered only minimal recognition in the
fifty years since his death, missing out on the paperback boom and the
revival that many of his contemporaries enjoyed. This first major collection
of his hard-boiled crime work brings together 8 stories, 7 reprinted for the
first time.

Torrey by Tom Roberts and Joel Lyczak.

The Space Annihilator: Early Science Fiction from The Argosy, 1896-1910, collects 16 tales from the first of the many "pulp" magazines that dominated America's literary landscape in the first half of the twentieth century. Most of the authors are unknown and most of these stories have never been reprinted.

"It's the force and originality of the ideas that makes these stories important and historic," comments pulp historian Gene Christie, who edited the collection and contributed an introduction. "More than a hundred years ago, our great-grandparents were actually reading about what we know today as laser beams, the Star Trek ‘transporter,' cellular telephones and man-made earth satellites. It's really hidden history, and these mostly obscure authors deserve to be known and credited for their daring and prophetic concepts."

One of the highlights of The Space Annihilator is the first published story by Gertrude Barrows, whose later work under the pseudonym Francis Stevens was praised by H.P. Lovecraft, A. Merritt and other masters of fantasy. As "Stevens," Barrows is credited with originating both the alternate universe story and the "dark fantasy" tale.

Other writers include Frank Lillie Pollock, Bertram Lebhar and Howard R. Garis, who created the "Uncle Wiggley" character that entertained generations of small children.

Farnham Bishop & Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur
IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR
BY FARNHAM BISHOP AND ARTHUR GILCHRIST BRODEUR

Return to the world of the Ancient Mediterranean, a place where men carved empires with their bronze swords and braved any danger for gold.  It is here that the cities of Troy and Crete clash, their fates resting in the hands of:

RAGNARR – the blonde, steel-thewed Warrior Prince of the Northern lands.  He is the  wielder of Tyrfing, the sword forged by the Gods.  Ragnarr leads a daring band of Northmen who are ready to face any danger, fight any foe, and die in the service of their Prince.

KING MINOS – King of the Island Empire of Crete, the Mistress of the Mediterranean.  His mighty fleets rule the waves, exacting tribute from all lands.  Minos ruthlessly suppresses any dissent.  His enemies meet their deaths at the hands of the Minotaur.

KING DARDANUS – the King of Troy, who chafes at his vassalage to King Minos.  He hopes to use the Northern Prince for his own gain.

ILIA – beautiful daughter of King Dardanus.  She gives her heart to one prince, but is loved by two.

AMBROGEOS – Prince of Crete, first-born of King Minos.  His love of Ilia and hatred of Ragnarr will engulf the Mediterranean world in an orgy of death and destruction.

ARIADNE – Princess of Crete, beautiful High Priestess of the Goddess.  She is torn between her love of her country and her love for her country's greatest enemy.

THE MINOTAUR: Horrific beast of legend, to whom the enemies of King Minos are sacrificed in bloody religious rights.

Filled with intrigue, raids, and exciting battles on land and at sea, IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR will thrill lovers of historical adventure!

First serialized in ADVENTURE in 1916, IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR marked the first collaboration between Farnham Bishop and Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur.  In addition to being fine fiction writers, both were very capable historians -- Bishop would write non-fiction books on the Panama Canal, submarines and the U.S. wars with Mexico, while Brodeur would become a professor at University of California Berkeley, translate Norse prose eddas and gain scholarly recognition for his work on "Beowulf".  In writing IN THE GRIP OF THE MINOTAUR, they drew upon their backgrounds and research abilities to create a believable tale of historical high adventure.  First time in book form.

Edited by Gene Christie
"In general . . . the Munsey publications did more to publish weird fiction than any other magazine enterprise of the early 20th century."
H.P. Lovecraft to Richard F. Seawright, March 31, 1932

Long before the stories in Weird Tales sent shivers down the spine, far in advance of the groundbreaking Dracula, Frankenstein and similar Universal horror films of the 1930s, Frank A. Munsey's pulp magazines were thrilling their millions of readers with edge-of-your-seat tales of terror by fledgling authors who would go on to dominate American popular literature.

Collected within these pages are 15 thrillers by A. Merritt, Francis Stevens, Sax Rohmer, Tod Robbins, Damon Runyon, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Talbot Mundy, George Allan England and others, many reprinted for the first time since their original magazine appearances as long as a century ago.

Included are:

  • The People of the Pit by A. Merritt
  • Behind the Curtain by Francis Stevens

Edited Doug Ellis - Vol. 1 1910-1912
Adventure Magazine first appeared in late 1910 and soon, attracting top name authors, became renowned for the type of fiction its name implied. It grew into a powerhouse in the genre fiction field, and was later dubbed by Time magazine, the "No. 1 Pulp." But in its early years, the magazine printed a surprisingly wide variety of fiction types—from westerns to light-hearted comedy, from South Seas tales to adventures set in the deepest jungles—to even works that could be deemed science fiction.

Culled from its first 26 issues, this collection brings together 24 of the best tales that appeared therein, including rarely or never-before reprinted works by Talbot Mundy, Damon Runyon, Rafael Sabatini, William Hope Hodgson, R. Austin Freeman, James Francis Dwyer, Frank L. Packard and others.

Selected and with an introduction by Doug Ellis.

Included are:

  • Introduction by Doug Ellis

Talbot Mundy

"For anyone who imagines Mundy's stories are simple-minded adventure melodramas, "The Letter of His Orders" shows Mundy to be a first-class observer of real world politics and human nature. In a very real sense, a story like "The Letter of His Orders" presages . . . Graham Greene. Where Greene makes fun of colonial intelligence officers in novels like Our Man in Havana, Mundy shows us the other side of that most mundane of heroes, the British colonial civil servant ... [as he]  fulfills the noble promise of unquestioning loyalty . . ."  —Gerry Conway, from this introduction

This title reprints three classic short novels from the pages of Adventure, Mundy's primary American market during the early years of his career.  With an introduction by Gerry Conway (writer/producer Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Father Dowling Mysteries, Diagnosis Murder, etc.)
